The 2020 census reports there are 37.9 million or 11.6%  people in America living in poverty, 3.3 million more than the year before. 

The official poverty measure defines resources as pretax money income, which includes income sources such as earnings and social insurance programs like Social SecuritySupplemental Security Income (SSI) and unemployment benefits

In the United States, the average Black and Hispanic or Latino households earn about half as much as the average White household and own only about 15 to 20 percent as much net wealth.
